When a crane is out of action you still bleed lost revenue, an idle operator you are paying, and fixed costs that roll on regardless. We add those up per day and across the days down. If you hire a replacement, you swap the lost revenue and idle operator for the hire rate — the comparison shows whether hiring in is worth it.
